Skills You Need To Become A Delivery Driver /Courier

The basics skills of working as a same day courier or a delivery driver aren't hard to pick up, but a good candidate for a job in this industry will definitely need the following attributes. Reliability, attention to detail, attention to customer service levels, good geographical knowledge of the local an long distant locations they'll be carrying out deliveries to and, of course, a clean driving licence, are generally considered basic conditions for working in this industry

Becoming a courier delivery driver will give you freedom and flexibility, this is very appealing to some people. Some delivery driver positions require at least six months’ experience and a driving licence with NO points.

Some employers will be very sensitive about how you drive in their company vehicles. Bad manners, aggressive driving and swearing at other drivers will not be tolerated

Courier work can cover just cities, other jobs will require knowledge of the entire UK without using a Sat Nav. Some roles will require a minimum age. Description of the role - Delivery Driver.

Couriers transport products that need an urgent delivery, usually on the same day. Among the items we regularly deliver are business or legal contracts, documents, Laptops, or fragile retail display to high street stores and Engineering machinery to oil refineries. There are also specific services to transport medical samples.

We deliver our customers consignments using various size vehicles - Small Vans / Large & Extra Large Sprinter Vans / 7.5 -tonne vehicles / 18-tonne vehicles and Artics (articulated lorry).

Couriers are required to carry out the tasks below on a daily basis.

  • Planning delivery routes.
  • Loading fragile items carefully onto and out of the van.
  • Examining goods before loading for quantity, damages or defects.
  • Obtaining for the item upon delivery of the consignment.

Skills needed.

  • Good Maths and English skills.
  • Being honest and reliable.
  • Having a suitable level of fitness.
  • Being punctual.
  • Having competent customer service skills.
  • Good Manners.
  • A presentable appearance.
  • Having good route and geography knowledge of the UK.
  • Being proactive and self-motivated.
  • Having excellent driving skills.
  • Being able to follow strict instructions.
  • Being organised and methodical.

Education.

Being a delivery driver doesn't need any specific academic requirements for application. Applicants must be at least 25 years old for insurance purposes and have a driving licence to drive a car or a van.

Training is usually done on the job.
