► What is a tail lift?

A tail lift is a device on the back of a vehicle such as a Luton van that is raised and lowered mechanically when loading or unloading goods. They are usually attached to the back of vans and trucks that help lower cargo and freight to the ground. They are very helpful when it comes to large items or heavy, bulky consignments such as tiles, crates containing heavy engineering machinery, and odd-shaped pallets. They’re specifically designed to make the collection and delivery of goods that are too heavy to unload off the vehicle by hand.

► When should you use a vehicle with a tail lift?

When it comes to a tail lift vehicle delivery service, you should use one if you have cargo that contains single pieces over 70kgs, or if you don’t have access to a forklift, a lift gate is the best choice for you.

► When don’t you need a tail lift vehicle for your delivery?

You won’t need a vehicle with a tail lift for your delivery:

• If your consignment is being delivered to premises with a loading bay/dock.
• If the collection and delivery locations both operate a forklift truck.
• If your goods are light enough to be loaded and unloaded by hand.

If you do need to move a large item or some heavy goods, and you require a vehicle with a tail lift to carry out your collection and delivery, it’s important to make the courier company you are using to move your cargo aware in advance as not all vans and lorry’s come fitted with a tail lift.
